Alta Archives: How Alta Saved My Ass

Normally, my trips to the grocery store do not warrant a blog post. This one was different.

Food was dwindling in the refrigerator of my temporary residence in Whitefish, Montanta, so I hopped in my trusty Subaru and headed to Safeway.

While I’d like to think my car is unique, there actually isn’t much that sets it apart from the thousands of other Subarus that look just like it on the roads in ski towns across America. It’s champagne with a big ol’ Thule rocket box on top plastered with stickers from my favorite companies and most memorable travels (Obviously, this includes a nifty selection of Alta stickers).

One of the Alta stickers that saved my ass

With food on my brain and little else, I pulled into the Safeway parking lot and whipped into a spot near the entrance between two relatively new cars. Looking back, I now realize I probably didn’t give myself enough room on the driver’s side. I opened my door without ganging out of the window … directly into the side of the car next to me. To make matters worse, the owner of the car had just started loading his groceries into the trunk.

I jumped out, gave the fresh scrape/slight dent a quick look, and launched into my apology speech which ended with: “I’m such an idiot, I’d be more than happy to help pay for the touch up on this or buy you the equivalent in beer.”

The owner came over, took a glance at the scrape/slight dent, scanned my rocket box and replied, “Don’t worry about it. Anybody sporting an Alta sticker is good in my book. Besides, I’ll do more damage to this thing this winter on my way down to ski Alta.”

Seriously, I can’t make this stuff up.

Moral of the story: Put an Alta sticker on your car.

Well, being a native Montanan (Great Falls) & almost having worn my Whitefish t-shirt today, I can say…..you were in the company of some pretty nice Montana folks! And being a SLC transplant back in the 70′s, Alta is heaven on earth! So altho I no longer ski Alta, I do frequent it in the summer and otherwise. I might just have to break down and get that Alta sticker for GOOD LUCK!
Thanks for the smiles…..and what a lucky guy you are!

Thanks for the comment and for sharing, Diane. Why the switch from winter to summer visits to Alta?
