Welcome Little Cottonwood Canyon Visitor:

We are pleased to be aware of your educational and scientific interest in the world -renowned mountain environment of Alta. Your project or class will see firsthand the ecological beauty, natural resources and diversity that this canyon holds. It is because of these treasured natural resources that most of the land in Alta is National Forest and that Little Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed under Salt Lake City’s jurisdiction. The community of Alta and Alta Ski Area are geographically located in the upper region of this culinary watershed, presenting us with a vested interested in the protection of the air, land and water in this canyon.

Alta Ski Area’s Environmental Center holds the mission of sustainability through a balance of the environment, business and community. Friends of Alta aims to protect Alta’s environment, including watershed and wildlife habitat areas, in addition to encouraging stewardship and sustainability of Alta’s environment and community. We have realized that our goals cannot be achieved alone, which is why we have joined efforts and created this “Research and Environmental Education Database Project.” The purpose of this project is to collect basic information on scientific and social research or environmental education in Alta or Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The information we collect will be entered into a digital database that will eventually be shared via the World Wide Web. The purpose of this database is to have a centralized location for all scientific research and environmental education performed in this canyon. The database will serve the community of Alta and visiting researchers and educators in the following ways:

  • A viable location for background information and references
  • A resource of contacts for guidance, information, and collaboration
  • A guide for project direction and objective
  • An educational tool for the classroom and self knowledge
  • A source for better understanding the dynamics of Little Cottonwood Canyon
  • A resource for technical support (access, transportation, lodging, supplies, etc.)

Sharing your information and feedback will guide us in serving, protecting, and educating future visitors. This project is more than a collection of information but a collaborative array of partnerships, and with that we welcome your class or research to Little Cottonwood Canyon. Please take the time to fill out the either the Environmental Education Info form or the Research Info form and send it to either Friends of Alta or the Alta Environmental Center. You are welcome to contact us if we can be of any assistance. Thank you for your participation!
