Alta Summer Stewardship Programs
Escape the heat this summer at Alta. The Alta Environmental Center has teamed up with key partner organizations to coordinate a variety of fun, family-friendly stewardship programs and educational events happening all summer long!
Join forces this summer through stewardship and educational events with the Alta Environmental Center, Friends of Alta, Alta Community Enrichment, Tracy Aviary, Cottonwood Canyons Foundation, Alta Ski Area, Tree Utah, the Forest Service and the Town of Alta. Take in the fresh mountain air with like-minded people as you give back to the area we love through one or all of these summer events.
There are a variety of stewardship programs available to attend that allow you to help beautify the mountains, maintain vegetation and establish trails while contributing to the sustainability efforts of Alta. Check out the events below to find out about programs and how to get involved.
Town of Alta Restoration Day
Join the Alta community on July 6th, to help plant flowers, maintain trails, and pull weeds to beautify the Town of Alta and Alta Ski Area (pre-registration is required).

Alta Volunteer Day
Starting on July 16th, Alta and its partner organizations will begin monthly volunteer days. Participants have the opportunity to work on 2-3 different activities taking place in a single afternoon. Activities include planting native vegetation, weed pulling, or tree harvesting. After volunteering on the mountain, join us for a community party in the town park! Feel free to bring a side dish to share, games to play, or a guitar to serenade others (pre-registration is required).

TreeUtah Harvest and Restoration
Come volunteer with TreeUtah and the Alta Environmental Center on the fourth Saturday of July and August. We will be harvesting seedlings and small trees that have grown in Alta’s ski runs. The small native trees removed and taken to a nursery. The trees will be transported back to Alta and planted on the mountain at a later date (pre-registration is required).
Alta Ski Area Cleanup
Spend August 3rd on the mountain helping Alta and others pick up things that have been lost or forgotten on the ski slopes during the ski season. We’ll start with a ride up the Collins lift, followed by a hike back down the mountain in search of winter garbage and the occasional treasure! (pre-registration is required).

Alta Ski Area Tree Planting
On September 7th, be a part of Alta’s busiest event of the season as we spend a burly day on the mountain planting 13,000 seedlings. These seedlings are native to Alta and previously handpicked from the mountainside (pre-registration is required).

Monthly Bird Survey
Join Tracy Aviary in a monthly bird survey beginning the second Monday of each month in September, October, and November as we search for the birds that call Alta home. Volunteers will have the opportunity to hike with expert birders while participating in the collection of Alta bird data (pre-registration is required).

Memorial Tree Planting
On September 13th, join Friends of Alta for a special day remembering a loved one as you plant a tree to honor them in Memorial Grove at Alta Ski Area (more information).

HawkWatch Live Bird Show and Hike
Starting July 5th, Alta and its partner organizations begin its monthly HawkWatch bird show and hike. Bring yourself, a friend, or a family member to learn more about different species of birds followed by a naturalist walk lead by one of our partner organizations (more information).

Don’t miss the brilliant colors in Albion Basin on July 20th at Alta’s Wildflower Festival! Follow along on guided hikes and learn about the different wildflowers that are indigenous to Alta. Don’t miss the live music and children’s activities at the Wildcat base area that day provided by Alta Community Enrichment (learn more).

Bring your kids to enjoy a fun-filled educational day in the mountains on August 9th. Our partner organizations will have several activity booths set up at the Wildcat Base area for all kids to enjoy. Each booth has a different activity teaching different aspects of the environment (more information).

Tracy Aviary Bird Talk and Walk
Enjoy a light breakfast and learn about the birds of Alta on August 17th! Tracy Aviary will give you a brief introduction to the birds that call Alta home, followed by a walk in the mountains as we search for those birds. (pre-registration is required).
