Alta general manager, Onno Wieringa, takes a minute to fill you in on this season's snow and how it's stacking up.
It looks like we've had a couple of months in a row with over 100" of snowfall putting us about on track relative to our 550" average. The water content is about 10% below average, which means we haven't seen as many nice graupel storms quite yet this season.
What a wonderful natural phenomenon snow is! It's delivered from the sky in unique shapes ranging from graupel to beautiful six arm stellars. Then we get to ski it as fresh snow. Days later we get to ski it as powder in the back/slack/side country when that fresh snow has matured into more of the classic definition of powder. And then again we get to take those versatile snowflakes and constantly rearrange them with snowcats, shovels and skis until they get buried deep enough in the pack to take on their next task of being a reservoir for our watershed.
That 4+ feet of water can be slowly released into the air, ground and runoff.
Snow is SO cool!
