Thank You for Another Great Season, Skiers

By Alta Ski Area 05-05-2015

For as long as I’ve been at Alta, the transition from winter to spring and on to summer, and the work that goes into the resort during each of those seasons, never ceases to amaze me.

Hello Skiers,

For as long as I’ve been at Alta, the transition from winter to spring and on to summer, and the work that goes into the resort during each of those seasons, never ceases to amaze me. I count myself lucky to be able to work with such a great group of committed year-round and seasonal people and that we get to make our living helping you enjoy Alta.

This winter was an interesting one. We received 324” of snow. Would we have liked more? Yes. But we’re skiers - we always want MORE snow. We did, however, have our fair share of great powder days, a winter full of beautiful weather, a host of great events throughout the season and a solid snowpack that allowed us to be 100% open for the majority of the year.

Our season may only run from late November through April, but we’re working on projects to hopefully improve the skiing experience up here for you, our skiers, 12 months per year. This summer we’ll be focusing on:

  • Solar Power Project: This summer we will be working on the setup and installation of our first solar panels. We will be installing panels at three different locations: Cat Shop, Collins Patrol Dispatch and the Buckhorn. The installation will require some unique engineering due to abundant snowfall and the goal of having a low visual impact. We will be using a Rocky Mountain Power solar incentive to help fund the the 20kW DC system.
  • Refine Alta.com: For most of our skiers, Alta.com is their main source of information during the winter. With that in mind, we will continue to work on and refine, Alta.com so that it’s user-friendly and ready to provide everything our skiers need. I would also like to apologize for one more time for Alta.com not functioning well this spring.
  • Forest Health Monitoring: Through the Alta Environmental Center, we will be working closely with the Forest Service to complete an inventory of our forest health that we can then compare to our 1994 baseline data.

The Alta Environmental Center will continue its award-winning sustainability efforts throughout the summer. If you’re looking to get involved with a great organization with great initiatives, be sure to keep an eye on what they’re doing and join in the fun and fulfilling work.

We feel fortunate to have enjoyed such a great season in such a beautiful place. With that in mind, our thoughts and prayers are with the country and people of Nepal and the current devastation that they are facing. As an organization, we will be offering our support and encourage you, our skiers, to do the same. Any donation is appreciated and goes directly to those in need. An organization that we will be working with is Choice Humanitarian - http://choicehumanitarian.org/.

Thank you for skiing with us at Alta this winter. We appreciate you spending your hard-earned dollars and limited recreation time with us. We will continue working on ways to make your skiing experience here the best it can be. We look forward to having you join us next winter for our 78th season.

Thank you,

- Onno
